Can You Really Know God’s Will?

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Do you want to be in God’s will?  Are you unsure what that means and how to get there?  Can you really know God’s will?  Do you need clarity?  I am at that place right now in life.

Knowing God’s will and way for your life is not a religious ritual or method or a 12-step program; it is a relationship.  If you have an intimate love relationship with God, He will reveal His Will to you and ask you to join Him where He is working.

Disclaimer, this post is written for those who have trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior and acknowledged Him to be Lord of their life.

If you have NOT done this, then the rest of this post will be meaningless to you because spiritual matters can only by understood by those who have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. (1 Cor. 2:14)

1 Corinthians 2:14 (NLT)

But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.

The popularity of my post, “How to Hear the Voice of God,” I believe is because people are hungry for truth today in the whirlwind of negativity and deception we call media.

How to Hear the Voice of God

The only way to know the truth is to go to The Source of Truth, Jesus.  Jesus said, “I AM…the Truth” in John 14:6.

The Bible says in John 1:14, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”  Jesus is The Word and He is The Truth.  God speaks to us through His Word, Jesus, and He is the only Truth in this world.  If it doesn’t line up with Scripture it isn’t the truth.

Hebrews 1:1-2(NLT)

Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son, (Jesus).

It makes sense that we can only hear God if we are saturating our hearts and minds in Scripture every day.  We cannot truly know or hear God if we are not spending time with Him in prayer and reading His word.

I’ve heard it said, “Why do you want to go to Heaven to be with God for eternity, if you don’t like spending time with Him now?”  On the other hand, what if your prayer time and time in the word is on point and you still need clarity?

Can you really know God’s will?

In the hope that I would find clarity in my present situation, I referred to a Bible study called,  “Experiencing God – Knowing and Doing the Will of God”, by Henry Blackaby.  If you are interested in this study, it is available HERE.

The tools from “Experiencing God” have been helpful more times than I can count.

When God is asking us to join Him in what He is doing, it will require faith because it will always be a “God sized” task.  It will be something that we cannot do in our own power. We have to rely on Him to accomplish it.

One of my pet peeves is the old saying, “God will not give me more that I can handle.”  Oh, yes, He will!  YES, YES, HE WILL!  You can bet your sweet bippy He will.

God wants us to lean on Him and trust Him.

If we can handle the thing on in our own power, we don’t need Him to accomplish it.  There is no faith involved.  It doesn’t take any faith at all to do the easy things.

I heard Beth Moore say once, “The hard thing is usually the God thing” and that has been true in my experience with Him.

When we take a step of faith and do the thing God is asking us to do, people will see God at work and will be attracted to Him.  He will be glorified through our willingness to step out in faith and trust Him.

I have also found when God is trying to direct me on to the path He has for me, there will be roadblocks if I go the wrong way.

He will set up a series of so called “failures” if I am going my own way instead of His.

This makes me think of Jonah in the Bible.  Jonah tried to disobey God and set out in the opposite direction from where God had told him to go.  So, God sent a great fish to swallow him and then spit him out back where he had started.  Roadblocks…they don’t have to be this dramatic but you get it.

God wants obedience from us.  He is our Father.  He will continue to put you back into the place where your disobedience began until you go the direction He has for you.

Are you experiencing a series of roadblocks?

Go back to the last time you were sure you heard God. What was the last thing you know for sure was God’s will for you?  Do that. Continue in that until you get a clear and direct message from God.  With me it was “Be still and wait”.

What is your last known word from God?

God will clarify what He wants.  He does not take disobedience lightly though.

When we are faithful with a little, He will trust us with more. When we are obedient, God will bless that and clarity will come.

If you want to know how to hear the voice of God and know His Will for your life, you must put in the time and effort to grow your love relationship with Him.

It is the same with any relationship.  You have to get to know a person and spend time with them to understand them.

Can you really know God’s will?

Can You Really Know God's Will?

Yes.  He wants to be known by you.  If you don’t have clarity from God on a matter, pray and wait.

Seek Him more fervently.  Don’t try to skip the hard thing.  He will give you enough direction for now.  When you need more, He will provide it and make a clear path in His timing.

Don’t run ahead of Him.  He doesn’t like that.  Believe me!

However, don’t lag behind either that appears as lack of faith or distrust.

Be patient.  Listen.  Be observant. God is working.

He will confirm what He is saying to you through your quiet time in the Bible and prayer and through circumstances and His people in the church. He is NOT silent.  When He is speaking, He will speak clearly and usually repeat Himself over and over (or He does with me).

When He speaks it is personal with each individual.

I can not tell you how He will choose to speak to you but He WILL speak if you wait patiently and spend time with Him.

I’ll let you know when I know my next step, if you will share your experience with me!

Love ya,
